Travel story content

Wayanad is one of Kerala's most naturally magnificent and ecologically rich destinations — a vast highland district carpeted in dense tropical forest, rolling tea and coffee plantations, and the mist-shrouded peaks of the Western Ghats. Recognized as one of the world's 36 biodiversity hotspots, Wayanad offers an extraordinary combination of wildlife, ancient history, adventure trekking, and stunning waterfalls that makes it one of the most complete nature travel destinations in South India.

Wayanad is where Kerala's forests reach up to meet the clouds — and every trail takes you deeper into that green, misty world.

Wayanad travel guide

Chembra Peak, the highest point in Wayanad at 2,100 metres, offers one of the most iconic trekking experiences in Kerala. The trail passes through dense shola forests and grassy meadows before reaching a breathtaking heart-shaped lake near the summit — one of the most photographed natural landmarks in all of Kerala. The panoramic views from Chembra's peak stretch across the entire Wayanad plateau and beyond, making the climb one of the most rewarding trekking achievements in South India.

Nature feels truly alive in every corner of Wayanad's hills, rivers, and ancient forests.

Edakkal Caves are among the most historically significant archaeological sites in South India. Located 1,200 metres above sea level, these natural rock formations contain ancient petroglyphs and inscriptions dating back to the Neolithic period — some of the oldest known rock art in India. The combination of a scenic hilltop trek and a genuinely awe-inspiring archaeological discovery makes Edakkal one of the most unique travel experiences in Kerala.

Itinerary and Highlights

Wayanad's waterfalls are spectacular. Soochipara Falls — a stunning three-tiered cascade plunging through thick jungle — is one of Kerala's most photographed natural attractions and a popular swimming destination. Meenmutty Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in Kerala, requires a challenging jungle trek to reach, rewarding persistent travelers with an extraordinary payoff. Both falls are particularly dramatic during and after the monsoon season.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and Muthanga Wildlife Reserve protect an extraordinary array of wildlife, including elephants, tigers, leopards, gaur, and hundreds of bird species. Jeep safaris through these protected forests offer genuine wildlife encounter opportunities in one of India's most intact forest ecosystems. Wayanad is nature travel at its most authentic and immersive.
